Fly fishing at the Doune Braes Hotel
and surrounding area
If fly fishing is your passion, then the location of the
Doune Braes Hotel is perfect for easy access to
seemingly countless fresh water lochans and lochs.
Directly in front of the hotel is a large lochan
stretching along the road for over 250 metres. If you
have chest waders, most of the water is accessible and
the fly fishing for trout is good. On the hotel side of
the lochan, you will find manicured lush green grasses
with a slightly rising hill behind you, making your back
cast unencumbered. Should you have a partner or friend
that just enjoys watching, there are many idyllic places
to sit and breathe in the surrounding beauty.
The lochan is owned by the Doune Braes Hotel and you may
fish at any time during your stay without a license. A
lochan is a small body of water which is far more
accessible to fish around, versus a large loch. If fly
fishing for you is a fun, casual past time and you
typically just pack a rod and take a few flies with you,
then the entire lochan is accessible with good walking
shoes. Please be aware that the hotel does not supply
fly fishing rods or other equipment.
One of our American guests wrote us to say, “Although
there have been many memorable moments staying at your
hotel over the years, one of my personal favourites has
been fly fishing right on the hotel property. Near to
the end of our four day stay this year, I woke very
early and strolled out the front door to water that
looked like a mirror. There was a pair of buzzards
hunting along the ridge of the hill at the other side of
the road and as my eyes were pointed upward, I heard the
splashing sounds of the morning’s first rise. Thank you
Eileen for having your cook prepare the fish that day
for our evening meal — it was a real treat!”
If fly fishing is your focus, let us suggest some lochs
and lochans for you to fish, including some excellent
waters leased by the Stornoway Angling Association. The
Creed river for example, is known for its salmon, sea
trout and brown trout, is easily accessible by car and
the gravel/stone road is well maintained. If you are on
foot, the river can be reached from several places and
the fishing holes are individually marked, making it
easier for newcomers to follow the map. There are
designated spots for “fly fishing only” on the Creed
river, so please enquire to avoid any mishaps. For more
information on salmon, sea trout and brown trout fishing

Association website. Please
contact them for additional
current licensing information and advice about the
various waters they lease.
